SHOULD YOU TILL YOUR GARDEN BEFORE WINTER?

It is generally not recommended to till your garden before winter, as it can expose beneficial soil organisms to harsh conditions and lead to soil erosion.

Reasons Against Tilling Before Winter

  1. Exposing Soil Organisms: Tilling can disturb the soil structure and expose beneficial microorganisms to cold, wind, and dry air, which can harm or kill them. This can negatively impact soil health and fertility in the spring.

  2. Soil Compaction: Tilling when the soil is too wet can lead to compaction, which hinders root growth and water absorption. Late fall or winter tilling is often not advisable because soils tend to be too wet or frozen, causing more harm than good.

  3. Erosion Risks: Exposed soil is more susceptible to erosion from winter precipitation and wind. Leaving the soil undisturbed can help protect it from these elements.

Projects we need to do before winter

Before winter, gardeners should focus on several key projects to protect the flowers and ensure a vibrant spring. Here are some essential tasks to consider:

  • Pruning: Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches to shape the plant and clear out any growth that may not be beneficial. This is particularly important for summer-flowering shrubs like butterfly bush or rose of Sharon, where cutting back about one-third of the old growth can be beneficial.
